CF8 is a cast austenitic stainless steel defined under ASTM A351, most easily understood as the cast equivalent of wrought 304. Where a component is produced by casting rather than rolling or forging, CF8 is typically specified where 304 would be used in wrought form. Chemistry centers on ~18–20% chromium and ~8–11% nickel (indicative; verify against ASTM A351), giving good general corrosion resistance, weldability and toughness.
CF8M is the molybdenum-bearing version (~2–3% Mo, indicative), improving pitting/crevice corrosion resistance in chloride or mildly acidic service — making it the cast counterpart to wrought 316. Wrought and cast grades follow different standards, so equivalences are indicative and should be confirmed against the standard and the foundry's certified material test report.
