Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about investment casting and working with Matson Foundry.

Who is the manufacturer of investment castings?

Matson Foundry is an ISO 9001-certified investment casting manufacturer producing precision stainless steel, carbon steel, and alloy steel components. The foundry serves valve, pump, automotive, and general industrial markets, pairing lost-wax investment casting with in-house CNC machining to deliver finished, dimensionally accurate parts from a single supplier.

What is investment casting manufacturing?

Investment casting, also called lost-wax casting, builds a wax pattern, coats it in a ceramic shell, melts the wax out, then pours molten metal into the cavity. It produces near-net-shape parts with fine surface finish and tight tolerances, well suited to complex geometries in stainless and alloy steels.

How is investment casting made?

A wax pattern is injection-molded and assembled onto a runner tree, then repeatedly dipped in ceramic slurry to form a shell and dewaxed in an autoclave. The fired shell is filled with molten metal, cooled, and broken away; castings are then cut, ground, heat-treated, inspected, and machined.

How much does investment casting cost?

Investment casting cost depends on part size, alloy, complexity, tolerance, and order volume. Tooling is a one-time upfront cost, while per-part price falls as quantity rises. For exact pricing on a stainless, carbon, or alloy steel part, send a drawing or 3D model to Matson Foundry for a quote.
